Where does the name Nooku come from?
The name Nooku is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word “Nuku”, which means “translate” or “to translate”. It was chosen to reflect to idea behind this project and follows the spirit of the Joomla! name that is derived from the Swahili word “Jumla”.
What are Nooku's high-level goals?
Nooku not only aims to become the leading mulit-language solution for Joomla! 1.5, it also wants to demonstrate that a funded business model can be a great way to create GPL'ed solutions for Joomla! in true spirit of the GPL licence.
If our effort is successful, Nooku will be Joomla!'s first truly open-funded GPL extension. It's our hope that this approach can serve as a example business model to the Joomla! community as to how companies can work together to achieve a common goal.
Who is behind Nooku?
Nooku is developed by Joomlatools with the support an guidance from a number of funding partners.
Why did you create Nooku?
One of the most requested features for Joomla! 1.5 is a multi-language solution for content translations. Both international companies and organisations are holding off on implementing Joomla! 1.5 because of the lack of multi-lingual content support.
We believed a multi-lingual solution would be a great addition to the platform especially since Joomla! 1.5 is mainly targeted towards internationalisation
There are already existing multi-lingual solutions for Joomla! why create a new one?
We felt that the only way to fully leverage all the power and flexibility offered by the new Joomla! Framework would be by creating a completely new solution from scratch.
How is Nooku licensed?
Nooku is licensed under the GPLv2 license in full compilance with the Joomla! project's GPL licence interpretation.
Where can I download Nooku?
Nooku isn't publically available, yet. At the moment Nooku is only available to our partners. If you want to deploy Nooku on your website feel free to contact us or any of our partners or consider becoming a partner.
How can I become a partner?
If you're serious about supporting open source code, you might like to consider becoming a partner. Details about the partnership program are available here.
Are there plans to make Nooku publicly available?
Nooku is possibly the first example of a next generation GPL software. How? It is written to professional standards by some of the world's best programmers and to allow us to spend months perfecting our code we've sought a funder (or partner) relationship, so our team is paid for its long hours and sweat. What this means? It means while Nooku will be released freely under the GPL, it won't be available immediately to the general public. Our partners get first bite while we're still perfecting our baby!
Testimonials
"If you are thinking multi-language; Nooku is a must have! Without it we couldn't even think to migrate to Joomla 1.5 As our website need to drive 13 different languages. People who will use it won't believe the features and it's perfect integration with Joomla. For us this made a giant step forward to improve our web presence. It's just brilliant!"
